National Service

Registration and Deferment
All Algerian Nationals born in Australia or New Zealand are required to register for National service when they reach the age of 18. Registration is automatically carried out at the Algerian Embassy in Canberra.

Deferment:
All students may defer their National Service for the duration of their studies . In order to avoid unnecessary delays, applications for deferment should be submitted to the Consulate at the beginning of each academic year.
 
Documents Required:
 
  • Completed application form.
  • Four recent passport photographs.
  • Current birth certificate.
  • Proof of enrolment from University or place of study.

Deferment must be renewed annually, to renew your deferment please supply the following documents.
 
  • Completed application form.
  • Deferment card (carte de sursis)
  • Proof of continuing enrolment from University or place of study.

Exemption for Medical Reasons
Exemption from National Service may be granted for medical reasons.
If you wish to apply for a medical exemption please provide the following documents.
 
  • Completed application form.
  • Medical certificate.
  • X-rays (if any).
  • Results of specialized medical tests (if any).
  • Proof of Surgical procedure (if any).
  • Clinical record of the condition (if any).
  • Proof of hospitalisation (if any).
 
Presidential Exemption
All Algerian Nationals born between the 02 of November 1959 and the 31 of December 1983
are eligible to apply for a Presidential Exemption.
 
Documents Required:
 
  • Completed application form.
  • Current birth certificate.
  • Two recent passport photographs.
  • Proof of completion of studies.
